Inside The Work

Moving through love, shame, grief, and transformation, the work follows what emerges when the private self is brought into the light. Across original poems, self-portraiture, theatrical imagery, and evolving linework illustration, INK transforms the page into a stage and the reader into a witness.

“Even though one cataclysmic event initiated this big bang, I was able to see so many flaws reflected in the scattered shards on the floor. My upbringing. My identity. My trauma. My family. My race. My orientation. My gender identity. My heart.

Each one stood in a lineup behind a two-way mirror, ready to be named the most fucked up.

And each one was.”

Author’s Note

As a professional dancer, movement has always been my preferred form of expression. Having trained in it longer than any other art discipline, it has always felt like my second language. Until it couldn't hold the story I found myself in.

In 2023, I found myself in a very precarious situation: starting life over in my thirties with no dance career, no money, and no home. Nothing but the tall order of surviving and the responsibility of unpacking every bit of the previous four years.

Even though one cataclysmic event initiated this big bang, I was able to see so many flaws reflected in the scattered shards on the floor. My upbringing. My identity. My trauma. My family. My race. My orientation. My gender identity. My heart.

Each one stood in a lineup behind a two-way mirror, ready to be named the most fucked up.

And each one was.

My relationship with every one of them needed to be addressed. Coddled. Supported. Loved. It started, and continues, with an honest and authentic view of each.

Which is why this art book exists. It is an exhibit in page form. A collection of the pieces I was forced to pick up, examine, and understand. Every photograph, every poem, every page is another wall in that gallery.

This healing journey has left me tenderly sensitive to just how delicate the human spirit is.

But also how impossible it is to extinguish.
